▶ Your Answer : Some
people might say that the government should raise the price of gasoline and
electricity in order to conserve fossil fuels. However, I strongly think that
this is not true. This is mainly because it is important for the
government to pay more attention to invest in valuable things such as
developing renewable energy. Also, a high price of gasoline and electricity
will increase people's stress.
First of all, the primary duty of the government is to develop
our country well. To be specific, since the
most critical reason people rely on fossil fuels is their efficiency, the government should focus on
investing in technologies about making effective renewable energy plants. This
will make people use more alternative energy because their price will be down, conserving fossil fuels.
Moreover, surveys have shown that when asked to choose between increasing the
price of gasoline and electricity, and spending money on developing technologies
about renewable energy, the majority of people responded that the latter should
have priority. Conversely, the percentage of people who supported the former
was extremely small. The results of the surveys indicate that people are aware
of the importance of preserving fossil fuels, and they know that just
increasing the price of gasoline and electricity is not a solution. Also, public works which can distribute the truth of
the serious condition of depleting fossil fuels will increase public's interest
regarding conservation of fossil fuels.
Second, as for preventing people's stress, increasing the price of
gasoline and electricity should be hindered. With society becoming colder than
before, the number of people who are suffering from stress caused by financial
problems is on the rise. On this occasion, high price of gasoline and
electricity is not necessary because this will increase people's financial
burdens. Also, what is worse, stress is one of the causes of illness because it
weakens the immune system. For example, my uncle, a doctor of a general
hospital in Korea, often tells me that many of his patients suffer from stress
related to financial problems especially their taxation. They came to him for
stress-related ailments and complaints. He has found a relationship between
stress and diseases such as headaches and insomnia, and high taxes on gasoline and electricity
will increase the chance of getting such diseases.
Taking all these things into account, we should disagree with the
statement that increasing the price of gasoline and electricity is the most
effective method for the government to preserve fossil fuels. This is because
just increasing prices is not an ideal solution for society and it will
increase people's financial problem. There is no doubt in my mind that there
are many ways to conserve fossil fuels other than increasing tax.
