▶ Your Answer : Some people think it is reasonable for the government to support scientific research even if it does not have any practical use. However, in my opinion, the government should not support such field concerning the fact that many other fields are not helped even if they have significant problem and the fact that the government can borrow the result of scientific research from other nations after having pratical uses.
To begin with, there is no doubt in my mind that the government should settle more realistic problems. To be specific, in many countries, real problems such as poor people and families only have one side of parents are not solved yet. A country can be a good place to live in only by resolving that kinds of drawbacks. For example, in Korea, there was a project which aimed to make solutions for helping poors and childrens who do not have parents. The government in korea decided to reduce their budgets of scientific research which did not have pragmatic uses. Over time, people who have monetary problems could be helped by the goverment. As a result, the number of people who were suffered from monetary problems significantly decreased from 42% to 21%. This proved that supporting scientific research which does not have pratical uses is not fair.
Moreover, the government can buy the result of scientific research when the research become have a pragmatic use. I admit that it is expensive to purchase the result. However, I truly believe that the advantages of buying the result outweighs the advantages concerning the fact that any scientific research has a possibility to turn a fail. For example, there was a study conducted by a social-science major in Seoul National University. The purpose of the study was to understand how much scientific research which are financially supported by the government finished with big success. What they found was intriguing. The researchers suggested that the overwhelming 73% of scientific studies ended with fails. The reasons were mainly concerned that it is likely that researchers in the scientific research spend the financial support of the government on their personal items.
To sum up, taking numerous realistic problems which are not solved yet and the possibility of buying the result of successful scientific research into consideration, it seems reasonable to not support scientific research. In this sense, I firmly hold that the government should not support scientific research even if it does not have any practical use. |
