Some people
think that high school students should take three or four courses rather than a
variety of subjects while others do not agree this. Both sides have their own reasons
to support their views. However, if I were asked to choose one, I would
say that high school students should study a wide range of subjects. The rationale
behind this is that a high school is a pre-step before selection of major and
they are unlikely to learn about basic things if they study only three or four
subjects.
To begin with, high schools are preparation
of university where students have to decide their major. If students did not
experience a wide range of subjects, they could not choose more appropriate major.
However, the opposite side claims that they have to focus on three or four
subjects. On the other hand, there are numerous examples that cast doubts on
their claims. Among them, this representative case shows why I think that they should
learn a lot of subjects. When I was in high school, I enjoyed reading books.
Furthermore, I wanted to have literature major in university. However, when I
was taught about biology, I realized it is very interesting. Naturally, I could
get biology major in university, and now I am a veterinarian. This implies that
experience of many subjects could be helpful for high school students.
In addition, when students only study three
or four subjects, they cannot have basic knowledge about other subjects. This
can be a problem when they become adults because fundamental knowledge is essential
for fulfilling lives. There is a survey result that endorsing thinking of mine.
It was carried out d a few years ago, and an absolute majority sided with the
reason as I mentioned above. Let me quote a few interviewees who partook a
poll. An university students said in the survey that he hates kanji when he was
in high school. However, it was required to all students, and then he was able
to learn Japanese and Chinese. A teacher mentioned in the survey that if she
taught only a few subjects, students could not be grown up happily due to lack
of knowledge on art or activity. This shows that teaching only three of four
subjects to students is not a good idea.
To sum up, I strongly believe that high school
students should be taught a lot of subjects. Firstly, this can provide the
cornerstone to students for their future major. Also if they got three or four
subjects, they cannot have a lot of basic knowledge. |
