Some people think that universities and colleges have to consider social and physical activities more importantly and invest more on them. This is because these activities are as crucial for student's life as classes and libraries. However, I believe that they are not as fundamental as quality of classes and libraries for universities and colleges and also investing in them is not efficient for two reasons.
First of all, physical and social activities are not beneficial for gaining better job and advancing student's future career. The main purpose of universities and colleges is to give students more professional knowledge about their field and teach some techniques related that. So, universities and colleges help students to plan and prepare their future careers by doing that. However, sports and social activities are not helpful for that unless a student's career is not related to that fields. Of course these are important for people's entire life, but, they are individual student's sector, not universities' duty. In the report from one of the most influential newspaper in 2014, universities which invested most money on their classes and forming good libraries got even better evaluation from students and experts than universities which focused on both classes and other activities.
Furthermore, investing in sports and social activities is far more costly. Establishing some sports facilities and forming social activities need even more money than purchasing books and increasing quality of classes. Since physical activities are various and need a lot of expensive facilities, colleges need quite large amount of investment. If they don't have or want to cut down expense, the quality of facilities are very low. So, it is not profitable to invest in physical and social activities. For example, when I was a university student, my university decided to establish the gym and the soccer field. Even if the university didn't have not enough money for those facilities, they went for it for students' well-being. But, unfortunately, due to the lack of investment, the quality was very poor, and not many students didn't want to use them. Like this, for universities and colleges, investing in physical and social activities is inefficient and not profitable.
To sum up, I strongly believe that physical and social activities are not crucial as the quality of classes and libraries because they are not beneficial for students' career and investing in them is too costly. The importance of my view cannot be underestimated in that it can kill two birds with one stone for the reasons I have mentioned above. All in all, I believe this trend will probably continue for the next generation. |
