A thought provoking current issue concerns whether playing sports teaches people important lessons about life. Some people claims that people can learn important lessons about life from sports. However, I want to cast doubt on the assertion that playing sports teaches people important lessons about life.
To begin with, regardless of any kind of sports, unfortunately playing sports is associated with severe competitions. And it cannot be said that competing with other people is more important than cooperating with others. Of course, we can learn how to work with various people as an one team, but its ultimate goal is to beat other teams to win. We have to win over opponents and this obsession can trigger unfair actions or ideas such as deceiving or improper actions, sometimes even known as the 'Hollywood actions'. In every FIFA World Cups that bring fierce competitions among participating countries, lots of audiences get disappointed with unfair plays. This means that sports are sometimes linked with severe competition, which is not that important in our lives.
On top of that, playing sports is may obliviously associated with discrimination that can be led to bullying. Some players do well while other players do not, and this is real not only for professional sports but also in amature sports. In addition, as for individual sports such as boxing, there is also a necessity to form groups to practice. In these cases, there must be dividing players according to their performances into selected group and substitutional group, upper group and lower group. When players are grouped like those, players' mind in lower groups can be damaged, and players in upper groups unconsciously can think that they are superior to players in lower groups, which can be linked with arrogance. This unseen conflict between two groups can result in distrusting, ignoring or bullying eac other. And absolutely this is not an important lesson in our lives.
To summarise, playing sports can leads us to harsh competitions and discriminating each other. And these possible problems are not important lessons which we may learn from sports. For these reasons, I am skeptical about the statement that playing sports teaches people important lessons about our lives. |
