Some people might claim that the government should spend more money on public libraries rather than schools, military or public transit. However, this perspective is highly doubtful for the two following reasons which I am going to elaborate. From my point of view, I fully feel that the government must invest less money on public libraries when the country faces an economic crisis among three factors.
First of all, money set aside for public libraries is always overwhelmingly more than that given to schools. Recently, there have been proposed budget deductions for the schools in Korea, while the spending on the public libraries continues to skyrocket. For example, there has been a recent proposal to cut funding for schools in Seoul by 16 percent, while the spending on public libraries continues to rise without much accomplishment. Frankly, a small percentage of people use the public libraries on the a regular basis because today’s people spend most of their time at school or at work in the work places. As a result, the schools fail to build new facilities to change improve studying environment and to recruit a lot of skillful teachers due to the lack of money. In contrast, the libraries have continually less and less readers. In this respect, if the spending on libraries reduces, it would not significantly affect a large number of citizens. This implies that the governments should pay more attention to curtail funding for public libraries rather than schools.
On top of that, the library users have alternatives that they can use if funding curbs. By using the Internet, even free of charge, they can obtain vast amounts of reading materials such as e-books and e-magazines sometimes even free of charge. Further, in the future, people will no longer use the read printed books. For instance, last semester, I had to write a report on the origin of string instruments. However, I was not familiar with the field genre, so I did not know which books I should utilize as references. After few minutes thought, I decided to use the Internet in my for research and in a matter of minutes, I could get a lot of information about the string instruments from all of around the world. If I had to do find all that materials on printed books or magazines that are available in the public libraries, I it would have probably taken a whole week. E-books’ The benefits of e-books compared to those of printed books, such as its their convenience, easiness to access and even the cost free, can impact millions of people in positive ways.
To sum up, the governments particularly invest a lot of money on public libraries at all time. Moreover, despite the absence of public libraries, there are diverse alternatives which people are available readily. In this regard, I firmly believe that reducing deductions for public libraries will be needed to resolve potential economic crisis.
