Some people might claim that the condition of the environment could
be improved as time passes. However, this perspective is highly doubtful for
the two following reasons which I am going to elaborate. From my point of view,
I personally feel that the environmental problems will perpetually last unless
the government makes additional efforts to solve this issue.
First of all, money set aside for the environmental issues is always
less than that given to economic boost program. To be specific, currently,
there have been proposed budget deductions for environmental agencies while
economic development program spending continues to skyrocket. For instance,
there has been a recent proposal to curb funding for the department of environment in Korea by 14 percent. This
will extremely confine the capacity of the
environmental department to protect the environment through extra regulations
or implementation of new laws.
On the other hand, spending on economic growth
continues to rise continuously with no much improvement of people’s living
standard in today’s society. This shows that the government in Korea takes a
step in order to settle this imbalance in
allocated funding.
On top of that, traffic congestion in the center of the city during
rush hour increasingly results in air pollution. In fact, one of the major
factors of pollution in urban areas is automobiles. The emissions from the cars’
cylinders go directly into the air and it can negatively affect people’s health
such as respiratory diseases. Nonetheless, now, the government in Korea do not
make conscious endeavor unlike concerns about industry and economy. According
to a study conducted by Korea University, a start-and-stop traffic of peak
hours causes idling, which is when the vehicle’s engine is working while the
car is not moving. This is major problem since idling creates carbon monoxide,
a harmful gas that is noxious to humans and environment. Thus, researchers have
insisted that the government must immediate take a suitable action to ameliorate
air contamination such as imposing congestion fees or encouraging people to use
free public transportation free of charge instead of driving their own cars.
To sum up, funding for the environmental problems is not on a par
whit that of the economy. Moreover, methods to
curtail air pollution lacks in our society. In this regard, I fully believe
that the environmental conditions will be permanent without government’s continued
attention and additional regulations to handle these harmful factors.
