Some people might claim that people have to charge fees to use
public transportation. However, this perspective is not true for the two
following reasons which I am going to elaborate. From my point of view, I personally
feel that the fees to take public transportation should not be charged in terms
of reducing traffic congestion and improving air contamination in busy cities.
First of all, using public transportation free of charge can curtail
traffics during rush hour. It is obvious that roads these days are so congested
that traffic often comes to a standstill. It is a key issue because it
increases the time it takes to get to and from school or work. Imposing the
congestion fees is a plausible solution to handle this problem. According to a
survey conducted by University of Klagenfurt’s research department, an
overwhelming 73 percent of the participants answered that they were in favor of
the idea that the best way to reduce traffics in the center of the city would
be to impose congestion fees. They said this is because
after the subway was free in Klagenfurt, the number of individual trips that
people made in their own cars plummeted by 23 percent compared to the past. As a
result, citizens in that area were able to enjoy a much smoother flow of
traffic on the road.
On top of that, free public transportation can reduce air pollution.
One of the main reasons of pollution in urban areas is automobiles. The emissions
of the cars’ cylinders go directly into the air and can adversely affect people’s
health such as respiratory diseases. According to the department of the
environment in Korea, a start-and-stop traffic causes idling which is when the
vehicle’s engine is working while the cars is not moving. Idling creates carbon
monoxide, a harmful gas that is noxious to humans. Further, researchers have
insisted that encouraging people to use public transportation free of charge
can curb idling. Since free public transportation can offer an inducement not
to drive, it will help ameliorate the quality of air in our cities.
To sum up, performing free public transportation can curtail traffic
congestions as well as improve the air pollution in crowded cities. In this
regard, I fully believe that congestion fees have to be free.
