▶ Your Answer : Nowadays, many universities focus their budget on renovating facilities and developing campus environment. However, I believe that universities should spend money on hiring good teachers rather than on facilities. I feel this way because students are really in need of good teachers and it is hard to decide which facilities to spend money on. First of all, what is really necessary for students’ development is excellent teachers. By hiring admirable teachers, university can gain competitiveness because good teachers have ability to discover students’ potential and give them advice. Many students go through incessant problems until they graduate. Excellent teachers, who would have also went through similar problems and seen many students overcoming the same situations, can help the students in many ways such as giving direct advice, introducing colleagues and so on. For example, I met a professor in university who always stimulated me and help me solve some problems. She was not only a good teacher whose lecture inspired many students, but also like a hospitable colleague that she always listened to me. When I had difficulty deciding whether or not to remain in my major, I talked to her 3 days a week to make satisfying decision. She searched for various people in my major and the major I was considering moving on, and gave information for me. Thanks to her, I could make wise decision. Also, deciding which facility to invest in could be another problem. Since there are many department buildings for many majors and even facilities such as library and dormitory, the university should distribute the budget in each facilities. This can lead to controversy over various majors since they all feel their own buildings have problems and are in need of renovation, For example, my university conducted a research that took all university students as respondents in order to make plan for using budget. The result of the research showed that both the natural science majoring students and economics majoring students were hoping to enhance the old building of each department. The university chose to renovate science building and its laboratory, and in contrast to natural science majoring students who were satisfied with their state of the art labs, students majoring economics and even other majors disappointed and were enraged. To sum up, spending money on hiring nice teachers would develop the universities in a long run the spending on facilities. For the reasons, good teachers make excellent students and choosing the facility to develop is not a simple problem.
