Some people think that students’ performance should not be a measure
for a teacher’s earnings. However, in my opinion, a teacher’s income should be
based on his or her students’ performance. The reasons are that teachers are
responsible for students’ achievement and earnings based on students’
performance motivate teachers to improve their skills.
First of all, teachers are accountable for
students’ achievement. Therefore, teachers who improve students’ performance
should be rewarded. For example, assume that there was a math teacher who
taught his students extremely effective, and the students got admissions to
prestigious universities due to high math score from SAT. Then, the school that
produced many excellent students would be famous and have a good reputation in
local community. Moreover, the students would have better career opportunities
compared to other students who went to less prestigious universities. Judging
by the resulting situation, the math teacher successfully accomplished his role
as a teacher. Therefore, he should receive more compensation than others.
Second, a performance-based wage system in
school can motivate teachers to enhance their teaching skills. If their wages
highly depend on their students’ achievement, they will struggle to teach their
subjects more effectively. In addition, according to a recent study conducted
by the Department of Korean Education, the current education system does not
have any incentives for teachers who contributed to students’ understanding of
their subjects, thus, lead teachers into loss of will to improve their teaching
abilities. This indicates that the introduction of performance-based wage
system is required to our current educational system.
In a
nutshell, by taking teachers’ responsibility for students’ performance and
motivation of teachers to improve their teaching skills into consideration, the
advantages of the compensation for teachers based on students’ performance far
outweigh the disadvantages of it. In this regard, I firmly hold that teachers’
income should be based on students’ achievement. |
