▶ Your Answer :[Crest of Lambeosaurus]
In
the reading passage, there is ample support for the author’s claim that some
theories reveal the roles of the crests that Lambeosaurus had on the top of its
head. However, the professor gives several reasons as a rebuttal to the
author’s point.
First, the professor insists that the use of
the crests to attract opposite sex is pretty much doubtful. This is because
most of the reptiles attract females by using their behavior and sounds not
their appearance. For example, crocodiles which are closely related to this
dinosaurs communicate with opposite sex by lifting their heads into the air and
making low growling noises. Thus, experts hold an opinion that Lambeosaurus
used the similar method to attract their mates. This casts doubt on the reading
passage’s claim that Lambeosaurus used the crests to attract females.
Second, the professor contends that the crests
were less likely used to combat. The fossils of Lambeosaurus indicates that the
crests were extended backward and were not fit for fighting. In addition, the
crests were hollow inside and fragile to defend or attack others unlike horns
of Triceratops. This counters the reading passage’s assertion that the crests
were used as a purpose to fight others.
Lastly, the professor argues that the crest
could not provide enough air while the dinosaurs are underwater. This is
because Lambeosaurus had a massive body which requires a huge amount of oxygen
for it. Besides, the crests were too small compared to its body to contain
enough oxygen to breathe. Therefore, Lambeosaurus was only able to use the air
in the crests for a few seconds. This refutes that the reading passage’s
suggestion that Lambeosaurus used the air in the crest while eating aquatic
plants underwater. |
