There are some people who believe that
people should search for information from a single source to be well-informed.
However, I personally believe that it is better to get information from a wide
range of news for two subsequent reasons. First, a sole source of information
is one-sided. Second, there are so much information that people can not
well-informed from one source. To begin with, there are so many opinions
in the world. To be specific, information can differ on the same issue as
people have many divergent backgrounds and experiences. Therefore, to avoid biased
information, reading a variety of news sources is highly recommended. I know
this from my personal example. I used to watch BBC to broaden my perspectives
toward the world, and I just followed and believed opinions in the news.
However, after I watched CNN, which is the American news source, I realized
that those broadcasts have different views on identical issues. Since BBC is
more leaned on European perspectives, their criticism is more favorable to
Europe than to other continents. In detail, BBC criticized that current
government should stop receiving refuges but CNN complemented the action based
on their contradictory views. Therefore, one should get information from
diverse sources. On top of that, there are too much
information in nowadays. This is because of increased supply of internet.
Hence, one news source can not announce all issues around the world and it
often omit news that the company thinks unimportant. According to the
department of media in the New York university, they choose a particular news
paper and estimated how much they cover international news. The result showed
that approximately 90% of the newspapers is written about domestic issues each
day. This study clearly illustrates that reading a newspaper, a single news
source, is not enough to cover international issues.
To sum up, a single news source is highly
likely biased and does not cover all issues. In this regard, I strongly believe
that one should seek to information from many news sources to be well-informed. |
