There are some people who believe that
traveling one's own country will gain more than going abroad. However, I
personally believe that going on trip to overseas would benefit more for two
subsequent reasons. First, it will be valuable opportunity to meet diverse
people. Second, it will improve one's language skills. To begin with, there are many different
countries in the world. To be specific, there will be more chances to meet
diverse people and learn about them if you go to overseas. For example, when I
was young, I traveled New Zealand with my parents. I could meet people in New
Zealand, Kiwis, learn about their way of thinking and cultures. Especially, I
was so impressed by their efforts to preserve the nature and resources. I
always thought that using natural resource is the only way to boost economy,
however, they showed me that how preserving the environment can increase the
GDP by attracting more tourists. It was the most valuable lesson I could learn
from the trip. The experience was not the same as something that I can learn
from books. On top of that, traveling abroad requires
foreign language use. This is because, almost every county has its distinctive
language and travelers must use foreign language to communicate in such
countries. Hence, overseas trip is a great opportunity to improve their foreign
language skills. This is supported by research done by ETS. It surveyed TOEFL
test takers and questioned about their trip to English speaking regions and
then matched with individual TOEFL score. The results show that TOEFL score
correlates with a number of travels and with the period. The most surprising
fact was that the score was lower before they go to the travel. Therefore, people
can improve their language skills through traveling off shore.
To sum up, people can have valuable lessons
which can not be experienced in their country and can improve their foreign
language skills. In this regard, I strongly believe that overseas trip is more
beneficial than domestic trip. |
